It’s the most common interview question — and your best opportunity to set the tone.
Almost every interview begins with the same request: “Tell me about yourself.” It sounds simple, but many freshers freeze or ramble. Handled well, this question lets you steer the conversation toward your strengths from the very start. Here’s how to answer it with confidence.
What the Interviewer Really Wants
They’re not asking for your life story. They want a quick, relevant summary of who you are professionally, what you can do, and why you’re interested in this role. Think of it as a 60–90 second highlight reel.
The Present–Past–Future Formula
- Present: Start with who you are right now — your degree, recent graduation, or current focus.
- Past: Briefly mention relevant experiences — internships, projects, or skills you’ve built.
- Future: Connect it to this role and company — why you’re excited about the opportunity.
Sample Answer for a Fresher
“I recently completed my Bachelor’s in Computer Applications, where I developed a strong interest in web development. During my final year, I built a college event-management website as my capstone project, which taught me a lot about working with real users and deadlines. I also completed an online certification in front-end development to sharpen my skills. I’m now looking to begin my career as a junior developer, and I was really drawn to this role because your team focuses on building products that reach a large audience.”
Do’s and Don’ts
- Do keep it concise — aim for under two minutes.
- Do tailor your answer to the specific job.
- Do practise out loud until it feels natural, not memorised.
- Don’t recite your entire resume line by line.
- Don’t share personal details like family background unless asked.
- Don’t speak negatively about anyone or anything.
With a clear structure and a little practice, “Tell me about yourself” becomes the easiest question of the interview instead of the scariest. For more preparation tips, explore our Career Advice section, then find your next opportunity on Valujob.
